Richard Heschke provides ten fresh settings of well-loved hymns, each including a prelude, intonation, and harmonization. The preludes, in the tradition of the vorspiel, include the entire hymn or hymnic refrain in ‘singing tempo’ and present a seamless introduction to the hymn itself. Intonations include a segment of the hymn melody, also in ‘singing tempo,’ and are meant to be used as an introduction to very familiar hymns or as a call to the resumption of a hymn that has been divided in its presentation. The harmonizations offer an alternative to standard hymnal settings and are intended to provide musical variety when combined with them. In some cases, at the discretion of the musician, they can also be used as an alternative to the hymnal setting.
